Eye tests for all of us today, and we decided to go to Vision Express at Meadowhall rather than Specsavers in town to avoid the rain. Alicia and Jan went first, and after a while I was called in to see the optician who was checking Alicia's eyes. She has some swelling at the back of one of her eyes which needs a referral from the gp for another checkup, but it's probably nothing to worry about.
My turn came next and after the usual panoply of tests (and I'm never entirely sure if the red or the green dots look clearer, or why that makes a difference) the optician spends rather a long time making me look in all different directions while he looks at the back of my eyes with a bright light that is making me twitch. "Hmmm" he says, and it looks as if I have something odd at the edges of my retinas as well.
So, that's a trip to the doctors and the eye clinic for both of us then. My prescription was barely changed, but Alicia needed some new glasses.
"They might take up to two weeks, 95% certain" says the woman behind the desk.
When we got home, (after spending nearly an hour trying to get out of the car park in the rain) they rang us to say the glasses were ready. Vision Express certainly lives up to the name ...

Vision Express are rubbish. They bent my glasses to make them fit instead of unscrewing them properly, I got lectured by some old optician (who called my girlfriend my 'son') on 'how peircings cause cancer'. I was not best pleased. I'm definitely going somewhere else next time.
